It’s believed that the origins of democracy can be traced back to Greece during the 6th century B.C. Others believe democratic ideals may have been practiced even earlier than this, in India, Mesopotamia, and Sparta. Regardless of its origins, our founding fathers saw democracy as the key for Americans to realize their pursuit of life, liberty, and happiness. In this “government of the people”, all constituents are given a voice, which is meant to prevent any particular party, special interest, or individual from wielding too much power.
Over the two hundred plus years that we have been a nation, we have defended democratic ideals within our own country and brought the gift of democracy to other countries formerly under oppressive rule. The DC Democracy Society Club exists to promote the practice of democracy. No matter what political party you align yourself with, as an American, you should be able to appreciate the incredible system of government our forefathers established. Join us for monthly meetings where we put aside political differences and discuss the history of democracy and its current role in our nation and the world.
